Let's talk about sex, baby, I I am writing in response to those who think abstinence should be taught in schools as opposed to information regarding safe sex. No one will deny that the "safest sex is abstinence." Sure, and no one will deny that if it never rained, there would be no leaky roofs. Teaching abstinence as opposed to safe sex is like discovering you have a leaky roof, and instead of covering the hole, you attempt to make it stop raining. No matter how virtuous and practical abstinence is made to seem, teens are going to have sex. Do proponents of abstinence teaching wish to punish those who choose to have sex by keeping them ignorant of safe ways to do so? Perhaps they believe an STD is fair punishment for the immorality of sex. Matthew Reininger Philosophy senior UT Daily Texan 9/23/2004
